📚 Readers Club Activity: Author Research Presentation

Discovering the People Behind the Books We Read

The Readers Club organised an engaging Author Research Presentation Activity in the school library to encourage students to explore not only the books they read but also the authors behind those books. The activity provided students with an opportunity to research, discover, organise information and present interesting facts about authors before their peers.

The activity was planned with the idea that understanding an author's life, background and writing style can help readers develop a deeper appreciation of their books.

📖 From Reading the Book to Knowing the Author

As part of the activity, each member of the Readers Club was assigned the task of researching the author of the current book being read. Students were encouraged to look beyond the story and discover the person whose imagination and ideas shaped the book.

Instead of simply reading the author's name printed on the cover, students explored questions such as:

Who was the author?
When and where was the author born?
What was the author's life journey?
When did the author pass away, if applicable?
What kind of writing did the author produce?
What was the author's writing style?
Which other books were written by the author?
What were the author's important achievements?
Are there any interesting facts about the author's life?
Is there any connection between the author's life and the themes explored in the book?

This approach encouraged students to look at a book from a broader perspective.

🔍 Becoming Young Researchers

Students were encouraged to collect information from library books, biographies, reference materials and other reliable sources. They had to identify important information, select useful facts and organise their findings before presenting them.

The activity therefore introduced students to basic research skills in an interesting and age-appropriate manner.

Rather than copying a long biography, students were encouraged to identify the most interesting and meaningful information about the author and present it in their own words.

🎤 Author Research Presentations

At the next Readers Club meeting, students presented their research before the group.

Each student shared important information about the selected author, including date and place of birth, date of death where applicable, writing style, major books, special achievements and other interesting facts.

Students also discussed what made the author's writing unique and how the author's ideas, experiences or interests could be reflected in their books.

The presentations transformed the library meeting into an interactive learning session where students listened to one another and discovered authors they might not have known previously.

✍️ Understanding the Author's Writing Style

A particularly useful part of the activity was the discussion on writing style.

Students tried to identify what made an author's writing distinctive. They looked at aspects such as language, storytelling, characters, humour, imagination, description, themes and the way the author communicated ideas.

This helped students understand that different authors have different ways of telling stories and presenting information.

By comparing authors, students began to realise that the style of writing can influence how a reader experiences a book.

The research activity also encouraged students to explore the other books written by the same author.

When students discovered that an author whose book they enjoyed had written several other works, it created a natural opportunity for further reading.

One book therefore became a doorway to discovering an entire collection of books by the same author.

This is one of the important ways in which library activities can encourage students to become independent readers.

🏆 Celebrating Authors and Their Achievements

Students also researched the special achievements and contributions of the authors they studied. They explored awards, recognitions, important literary contributions and other milestones wherever relevant.

Learning about these achievements helped students understand that authors are not simply names printed on book covers—they are individuals who have contributed ideas, stories and knowledge that continue to influence readers.

The activity also strengthened the connection between reading and research, showing students that every book can lead to many more questions and discoveries.
