The Reading Promotion Week – 3 at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Sundargarh witnessed an engaging Words Per Minute (WPM) Reading Competition on 20th Jauuary 2026. Students from Classes 3 to 8 actively participated to test their reading fluency, accuracy, and speed.
The competition was organised under the guidance of Mr. Sunil Prasad, Librarian, along with Mr. Chhabila Pradhan (PRT). It was conducted separately for Junior (Classes 3–5) and Senior (Classes 6–8) categories.
Students were given short reading passages suited to their level.
Each participant was timed for one minute while reading aloud.
Judges measured speed (words per minute), accuracy, pronunciation, and expression.
The activity motivated students to focus on both clarity and pace in their reading.
One junior student read her passage so clearly and confidently that the audience clapped spontaneously—even before the timer ended!
The judges were impressed by the fluency and improvement shown by many students. The top three winners from each category were selected, while all participants received valuable feedback on how to become better readers.
The Words Per Minute Reading Competition added a fun yet meaningful dimension to the Reading Promotion Week – 3. It not only encouraged healthy competition but also helped students discover ways to improve their reading skills, speed, and confidence.
