🕊️ Gandhi Jayanti: Celebrating the Life, Legacy, and Ideals of Mahatma Gandhi Through the School Library
Introduction
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”
Mahatma Gandhi, fondly remembered as the Father of the Nation, remains an enduring symbol of truth, non-violence, peace, simplicity, and selfless service. His life and ideals continue to inspire generations to stand against injustice, respect others, and work towards a more peaceful and harmonious world.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, celebrated on 2 October, a special library activity was organised to acquaint students with the life, contributions, and enduring philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme featured a biographical presentation through a PowerPoint (PPT) and an exhibition of books on and by Mahatma Gandhi, with a special focus on non-violence. The initiative aimed to promote historical awareness, encourage reading, and inspire students to reflect upon Gandhian values in their everyday lives.
💻 A Journey Through the Life of Mahatma Gandhi
As part of the celebration, a PowerPoint presentation was shown to students, highlighting the major events and milestones in Mahatma Gandhi’s life. The presentation introduced students to his early life, education, experiences in South Africa, and his emergence as a prominent leader of India’s freedom struggle.
Students learned about Gandhi’s significant role in movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Salt March, and the Quit India Movement. The presentation explained how he mobilised people through peaceful resistance, truth, discipline, and determination in the struggle against British rule.
Special emphasis was placed on his philosophy of Satyagraha, which advocated resistance to injustice through truth and non-violence. The presentation helped students understand that Gandhi’s contribution extended beyond the achievement of political freedom; his ideals also emphasised communal harmony, equality, self-reliance, dignity of labour, and service to humanity.
Through this visual and informative session, students gained a better understanding of Gandhi’s life, his struggles, and the principles that guided his actions.
📚 Book Exhibition: Exploring Gandhi Through Books
A special book exhibition was organised in the school library to provide students with an opportunity to explore the life, philosophy, and contributions of Mahatma Gandhi through books.
The exhibition featured books written by Mahatma Gandhi and books about his life, work, and ideals, along with reading materials focusing on peace, non-violence, and conflict resolution. Students were encouraged to browse the displayed collection and discover how Gandhi’s ideas influenced India’s freedom movement and continue to hold relevance in the modern world.
The displayed books offered insights into his personal experiences, leadership, commitment to truth, and efforts to bring about social change. The exhibition also highlighted the importance of non-violence as a way of resolving conflicts, respecting differences, and promoting understanding among individuals and communities.
The activity encouraged students to move beyond textbook knowledge and explore historical personalities through independent reading. It also reinforced the school library’s role as a centre for knowledge, reflection, and meaningful learning.
🕊️ Understanding the Power of Truth and Non-Violence
A central theme of the Gandhi Jayanti programme was the importance of truth and non-violence in building a peaceful society.
Students were encouraged to reflect on how Gandhian values can be practised in daily life. Speaking the truth, treating everyone with respect, resolving disagreements peacefully, helping those in need, and accepting different viewpoints are simple yet powerful ways to follow his ideals.
The programme highlighted that non-violence is not merely the absence of physical aggression; it also involves compassion, patience, self-control, and respect for the dignity of others. Gandhi’s philosophy teaches us that courage and determination can be demonstrated through peaceful action and a commitment to justice.
These discussions helped students recognise that the principles of peace and non-violence are relevant not only to national movements but also to classrooms, friendships, families, and society at large.
