Mental Health Month

🌿 Mental Health Month at the School Library

Healthy Minds, Happy Hearts: Nurturing Mental Well-Being Through Awareness and Creativity

Mental health is an essential part of a student's overall well-being. Just as physical health helps us stay active, mental well-being helps us manage emotions, cope with challenges, build healthy relationships and approach life with a positive outlook.

To create awareness about the importance of mental health and emotional well-being, the school library organised activities under Mental Health Month, combining an educational video screening with a creative Bookmark Making Activity. The initiative encouraged students to reflect on their feelings, understand the importance of self-care and express positive messages through creativity.

🎥 Learning Through a Mental Health Awareness Video

As part of the programme, students watched an informative video related to mental health and well-being. The video introduced them to the importance of maintaining a healthy mind and recognising emotions in everyday life.

Through the visual presentation, students were encouraged to understand that everyone experiences different emotions and that feeling worried, sad, stressed or overwhelmed at times is a normal part of life. The session highlighted the importance of expressing feelings, maintaining a healthy routine, taking breaks, engaging in enjoyable activities and seeking support from trusted adults when needed.

The video also helped reinforce the message that mental health deserves the same care and attention as physical health. Students were encouraged to treat themselves and others with kindness, empathy and understanding.

🎨 Bookmark Making Activity: Messages for a Healthy Mind

Following the video screening, students participated in a Bookmark Making Activity based on the theme of mental health and emotional well-being.

Students creatively designed bookmarks using colourful illustrations, thoughtful messages, positive affirmations and encouraging quotes. Their designs reflected ideas such as self-care, kindness, friendship, hope, gratitude and the importance of taking care of one's mind.

Some inspiring messages suitable for the activity included:

  • “Your Mental Health Matters.”

  • “It Is Okay to Ask for Help.”

  • “Be Kind to Your Mind.”

  • “Take a Break, Breathe and Begin Again.”

  • “You Are Stronger Than You Think.”

  • “A Little Kindness Can Make a Big Difference.”

  • “Every Day Is a New Beginning.”

The activity provided students with an opportunity to transform an important message into a small, meaningful creation. Their bookmarks served as reminders that caring for mental well-being is an everyday practice.

📚 Connecting Mental Health with Reading

The school library offers a welcoming environment where students can explore books, learn new ideas and spend quiet time reading. Reading can provide opportunities for relaxation, reflection, imagination and emotional understanding.

The activities conducted during Mental Health Month highlighted how the library can contribute to students' overall development by combining awareness, reading, discussion and creative expression.

The bookmarks created by students also carried a special connection to reading: every time a bookmark is placed inside a book, it can remind its reader of the importance of kindness, hope and self-care.

🌱 Learning Outcomes

The Mental Health Month activities helped students to:

  • Develop awareness of mental health and emotional well-being.

  • Understand the importance of self-care and healthy daily habits.

  • Recognise the value of expressing feelings and seeking support.

  • Develop empathy, kindness and respect for others.

  • Express thoughts and positive messages through art and design.

  • Enhance creativity, imagination and fine motor skills.

  • Appreciate the school library as a supportive and welcoming learning space.

💚 Building a Culture of Care and Understanding

Mental Health Month provided an opportunity to remind students that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. A supportive school environment encourages students to speak to trusted adults, listen to others without judgement and understand that everyone may face challenges from time to time.

Through the video screening and bookmark making, the library created a meaningful space for learning, reflection and creativity. The activities conveyed the message that small steps—such as taking a break, talking to someone, practising kindness or enjoying a good book—can be valuable parts of caring for ourselves.

✨ Conclusion: A Healthy Mind Is a Valuable Treasure

The Mental Health Month programme successfully combined awareness through audiovisual learning and creativity through bookmark making. Students explored the importance of mental well-being and expressed positive thoughts through their handmade bookmarks.

The initiative reinforced the idea that a healthy school community is built not only through academic achievement but also through emotional awareness, empathy and mutual support.

🌿 “Take Care of Your Mind, Be Kind to Yourself, and Spread Kindness Around You.”

Let us continue to create a school environment where every student feels valued, supported and encouraged to grow.

Read with joy. Create with purpose. Care for your mind. 💚📚
